altec 605b -> 416
I've got a pair of stonehenge V cabs with 605b's in them.
I've got a pair of 511 horns with 808 drivers...
I've got a pair of 511 horns I'm going to try to convert to 511e
Well...if I can get another set of the gpa 288h drivers...then that would be a gas.
511Es with 288s and a nice cab with 416s....
So maybe a pair of 416s and replace the 605s...I'm thinking I should trade...
OG suggested maybe using the 605's horn as a tweeter.
I dunno...it seems less complicated and more coherent if I go after a two way system.
Anyone wanna trade? Ideas from the experts?
I'm creating a music making area in a smaller room than usual so I can't fit the massive system there.

This is similar to what I'm looking to do,with my new 511E's

Hi Steve that certainly makes sense. With a smaller room to go with a 2-way I would very much like to see your progress on this. I can always use some good sound ideas, especially on cabinet design. But 1 thought that I keep coming back to is and how to deal with it.With the 288's they kinda overpower a single woofer set-up and they really need dual woofers or a complimentary sub woofer. So a 2-way may not work with a 511E/288H.I dunno if they are shelved all the way (288) maybe. To these EAR'S

Hey thanks!
What I might do is very similar with what I did with the big system.
I've got the Behringer crossover of which I will feed digital from the computer.
Then I'm going to get a few more of Scott Endler's attenuators for the horns.
Then a smaller than the big system's power amps...maybe a Khartago solid state class A amp from odyssey audio for power.
I've got a Crown DC-75A I can use on the 416s....probably a good start.
BTW, called up GPA and they make 416 alnico speakers too...very nice.

Thanks Steve !!
What are the dimensions of the room.I threw together a system over Easter weekend it is a 612C cabinet with a 416-8B in it and a 288C with a 8-G fram 23763 on a 1005A tar-filled horn and they are extremely efficient.I'm just using a N501 crossover that fit perfect in the cabinet.I had to shelve the crossover all the way because the 288 just drowned out the 416,dual woof's definitely needed.I haven't had a chance yet to put in the 511E.With the same amount of power they are twice as loud as my 19's side by side.In no way are they a permanent system was just playing around to see what I could come up with. But I want to put the 511 in and replace the 1005 to check the difference if any.
It's really nice to see them adding a bunch of new Alnico drivers ! :2thumbsup:

I've used the 604-8K as woofer/tweeter with a horn on top for midrange. Works pretty well.
Would be interesting to hear the 288 on a 511. That horn is rather mid heavy, wonder if it would be more or less so with a big driver?
Keep us up to date.
I do have a spare pair of 416-8A -if you are interested.

Hi,
Could you share details of this system.
I have a pair of 605B's(will use them in 8-9 cuft cabinets)
I would like to try and use the woofer section upto 300hz and a RCA phenolic compression driver on a horn from 300Hz,and bring in the 605 HF driver in around 5000hz.
Would this work?
Regards
Rajiv

Hard to say without looking at the raw measurements of the RCA horn and driver. How big is the horn?
5K is no problem for the 605 horn, but it still needs a shelf to tip up the top end. I used and active crossover - but don't remember the points - sorry.

Steve, One other thing they actually sound pretty good even with them shelved all the way down.I was finally able to pick up a set of T350's at a more reasonable price.I'm waiting for their arrival when they come I will add them and let you know how they sound.:2thumbsup:
The horns are in great shape structurally they just need some serious paint.
I'm looking forward to putting in the 511E's as the 1005's are quite large they will fit on top a bit better. Then throw them on top of my 19's and pack up the Cornwall II's

Those 1005s are much too big, John. They need to come live at my house where they will have room to breath.
